ithir is Irish for soil.

The pronunciation varies depending on the part of Ireland the speaker originates.

At ithir we embrace the challenge of discussing death, knowing it won't bring about our immediate demise. Instead, we believe that talking about death empowers us to prepare for our own deaths, helps us to support our loved ones in the contemplation of their lives and deaths, and better prepares us to support those living with grief.

Let's be real, we are all going to die. So let's talk about it.

Our merchandise is a lighthearted attempt at getting people to talk about death because we believe that everyone has the right to a "good death". There is a lot we need to do to make that a reality and talking about it can only help to get us there.

Why herbs? We find solace in working with plants and believe many of our plant friends are here to help us in innumerable ways; death and grief care included. The act of cultivating plants helps us to watch the cycles of nature and take heed its lessons.
